The people of Uzbekistan are called Uzbeks and are the descendants of the famous, or depending on whose side you were on, infamous, ruler Genghis Khan. Uzbeks have a strong national identity and are famed for their generous hospitality and welcoming nature.

The majority of Uzbeks follow the Islamic or Muslim religion. It is traditional for men, women and children to wear a doppa, a beautifully embroidered skullcap, worn on the head. Each pattern is carefully designed to represent which particular region they are from.

The covering of your head in the Muslim religion is important and considered an act of devotion before God.
